The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to Virginia Commonwealth University. In that capacity, the General Counsel advises the Board of Visitors, the President, executive officers, administrators, faculty and staff, in their official capacities, on various legal issues impacting the University.

The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for providing a full range of legal services to the University. Some areas in which we provide legal advice and representation are: business matters, transactions and contract review, labor and employment, litigation, property acquisitions, student and faculty issues, among others.

The Office of the General Counsel provides legal services related to University business only. You may consult with us regarding legal matters related to issues arising from your official duties at the University; however, you are responsible for hiring your own attorney to handle personal legal matters. If you need help finding a qualified, personal attorney, the Virginia State Bar’s Attorney Referral Service may be able to assist you. It can be reached at (804) 775-0808.

For the convenience of the University community, our office has a Notary Public.

Please note that legal services for the components of the VCU Health System are provided by the VCUHS General Counsel’s Office. The Health System's General Counsel is Jean Reed. The phone number for that office is (804) 828-9010.
